100% cotton fabrics, mostly machine pieced, machine quilted with rayon and cotton threads.
I created Dimensional Weavings as an art piece for the living area in our home. I wanted to create a quilt that gave the illusion of depth and blurred the boundaries between two and three dimensions. I envisioned a scene with different shapes, floating in space, moving in and out of the third dimension. I thought of the shapes as if they were marble or wooden objects, with designs carved on the surfaces. An arched doorway stands in the background.
The fabrics were chosen to accent the color scheme in the living area. I consulted Diana Swim Wessel’s book, Inspiration Odyssey, for techniques to create the depth illusion using fabrics. Optical Illusions for Quilters, by Karen Combs was invaluable for it’s discussions of depth and perspective. Quilting designs were added to create “carved” details and enhance the depth and dimensionality of the shapes and background.
