Off the Bookshelf—Quilt Savvy, Gaudynski’s Machine Quilting Guidebook, by Diane Gaudynski

Quilt Savvy: Gaudynski\'s Machine Quilting Guidebook

Quilt Savvy: Gaudynski’s Machine Quilting Guidebook,
by Diane Gaudynski

I just got this book from Amazon yesterday, and I read it cover to cover last night. What a great addition to my machine quilting library! This eagerly awaited “sequel” to her first book, Guide to Machine Quilting, is in a special new smaller format with a wire-o binding, perfect for keeping next to your machine while you quilt. And you’ll want to, with all the neat new techniques for background textures and freeform feathers Diane explains in pinpoint detail. Super full-color photography throughout means you can see exactly what the stitches should look like every step of the way.

I took a class with Diane at Houston one year, where she was introducing some of the many new background textures in this book. Now I have the book to reinforce her teachings with even closer views than I got in the classroom. Note that this is not a total beginner’s kind of book. There are no “to start quilting, you do this” statements or long discussions about supplies and materials See her first book for those kinds of things. In Quilt Savvy, she does talk about thread tension, wool batting and the trapunto by machine technique, including a pattern and instructions for a lovely trapunto t-shirt that I absolutely have to add to my wardrobe! “Skinny threads” like #100 silk and fine cottons are discussed in detail with many tips for using these threads included. This book has already found a home right next to my machine.
